Research Activities

The Department of Health Sciences offers a wide range of well-equipped scientific laboratories where PhD candidates from all curricula can carry out their study and research activities. In addition to these laboratories, the programme includes collaborative laboratories and healthcare facilities affiliated with DSS and with the academic disciplines that form the core of the PhD training programme. Furthermore, the DSS includes the Chair of two Service Centres, where-following the University’s authorization—PhD candidates may carry out part of their training and research.

Specifically, the available facilities include:

1. RESEARCH LABORATORIES

PhD candidates can conduct their activities in different high-level research laboratories affiliated with the DSS.

2. Collaborative LABORATORIES

  • InNovaTivE dRugs for Cell-sPecific Targeting (INTERCEPT)
    (Scientific Coordinator: Francesco De Logu)

3. UNIVERSITY SERVICE CENTRES

Following the authorization by the University, PhD candidates may carry out part of their activities at the following Service Centres:

  • Tanatocentrum – Service centre for research and advanced training on cadavers and forensic identification
  • CeCoPs – Service Centre for Psychological Counselling, Psychotherapy, and Clinical Psychology

4. HEALTHCARE FACILITIES at AOU Careggi, AOU Meyer, and Azienda USL Toscana Centro

Following  the authorization from the respective institutions, PhD candidates may carry out part of their activities at the following healthcare units:
• Units at AOU Careggi: Anesthesiology, Legal Medicine, Pharmacology, Palliative Care, Phase 1 Clinical Trial Unit, Headache Centre and Clinical Pharmacology, Pathological Anatomy
• Units at AOU Meyer: Pediatrics
• Units at Azienda USL Toscana Centro: Dermatology

All research laboratories available to PhD candidates are equipped with computers connected to the Internet via university credentials. Workstations are equipped with essential software tools for conducting research activities and preparing final research data, including scientific publications. Additionally, Wi-Fi access is provided throughout the facilities.

PhD candidates will also have access to dedicated spaces for data processing and analysis, as well as consultation of scientific and bibliographic databases relevant to their research projects. They will actively participate to the activities of the research groups affiliated with their specific fields and will be able to use the resources available in their Tutors’ laboratories and clinical services. The training programme is further supported by access to shared research infrastructures provided by the University.
