Mission

The Department of Health Sciences (DSS) of the University of Florence places the promotion of individual health and psycho-physical well-being at the core of its mission, directing departmental teaching, research, and third mission activities toward the development of innovative knowledge and skills to address the preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, bioethical, and bio-medico-legal challenges related to the protection of individual and public health. The Department encompasses a wide range of healthcare disciplines, spanning from pharmacology to medicine and nursing, all the way to psychology.

This composition fosters a translational approach to university missions, as well as the study and development of integrated care models implied and required by advanced forms of personalized and global healthcare. The Department promotes education not only in the specific subjects of its constituent disciplines, but also in integrated knowledge and the outcomes of translational research, which it advances through its extensive network of research laboratories and broad undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities across various Schools in the healthcare, legal, social, economic, and biological science fields, as well as in advanced training programs such as PhDs, Master's degrees, and healthcare Specialization Schools.

The Department is committed to growing and consolidating through the structuring of a quality management system that effectively and transparently supports the implementation of the university's three missions. By adopting a process-based approach that integrates risk-based thinking, this system aims to ensure competitive and responsible departmental action tailored to the needs of students, the scientific and academic community, the general population, local institutions, and the industrial sector. All activities are guided by the principle of continuous improvement, respecting the values of inclusion, sustainability, and transparency. In this way, the DSS aims to serve as a unifying and motivating force to reach levels of excellence that contribute to the national and international competitiveness of our University, as well as the University-Hospital and Local Health Authorities in which it operates.
